The closer a roof sits to salt water, the more the substrate underneath the coating matters, not just the coating on top of it. As a rule of thumb: oceanfront and near-shore work is where we quote aluminum, because aluminum does not corrode at a scratch or a cut edge the way steel does once its protective coating is breached. Move further inland and Galvalume steel finished in PVDF is a sound, less expensive choice. This is a distance-based decision, not an all-or-nothing one. The industry keeps drawing a line somewhere in the first half mile of open water, but it does not agree with itself on where, and we cite the actual documents below rather than invent a number of our own.
Why aluminum behaves differently at the water's edge
Steel roofing is protected from rust by a coating, typically the Galvalume aluminum-zinc alloy layer, plus whatever paint system sits on top of it. That protection works as long as it stays intact. Where a panel gets cut, drilled, or deeply scratched through to bare steel, and salt-laden moisture reaches that exposed edge, steel can begin to rust at that specific point, even while the painted field of the panel is fine.
Aluminum does not have that failure mode in the same way. It forms its own thin oxide layer on any exposed surface, including a fresh cut edge, and that oxide layer is what protects it, not a separate coating that can be breached. That is the practical reason aluminum is the substrate we reach for on the panels closest to open salt water: cut edges, fastener penetrations, and field modifications are a normal part of any roof installation, and aluminum tolerates them at the water's edge in a way bare steel does not.
The 1,500 foot figure, and why it is not a standard
You will see a specific distance attached to coastal corrosion guidance across the metal construction industry, and it is worth stating plainly: it commonly shows up as 1,500 feet from a saltwater body. This is not a number we invented for ERS Metals, and it is not a term in our own material warranty, which does not carry a written coastal exclusion clause we can quote. It is the threshold the Metal Construction Association itself uses in its technical bulletin on fastener compatibility with metal roof and wall panels, which flags "coastal marine, (within 1,500 feet from a saltwater body)" as one of the highly corrosive environments where standard fastener and cladding compatibility guidance may not hold and where the base metal's performance can be impaired. Separately, Sheffield Metals states on its own paint warranties that within 1,500 feet of salt water a standard coating warranty will not apply, and that for SMP this holds even on aluminum.
Do not read 1,500 feet as an industry standard, though, because it is not one. Real warranty documents draw the line in very different places. One published Galvalume substrate warranty uses a three-tier table: 1,500 feet from coastline with breaking surf, 800 feet from a large bay, 400 feet from marsh. Others use 2,800 feet with an annual fresh water rinse required inside it. Some coastal aluminum forms set no distance at all and instead require a rinse twice a year. And at least one SMP warranty excludes salt categorically with no distance mentioned. Anyone who tells you the industry number is 1,500 feet has read one document.
None of those numbers is a line item in an ERS Metals document. Our coil producer's published warranty terms for standing seam carry no written coastal exclusion, and we are not going to attach a distance to our own coverage that the producer has not confirmed. Two things are still worth taking from the pattern. The corrosion engineering behind it is real and consistent even where the distances are not: proximity to salt water is a materially different environment. And on any coastal job you should ask for the specific warranty document rather than a distance quoted from memory, because 400 feet and 2,800 feet are not close to the same promise.
Where Galvalume steel with PVDF is the right call
Move inland of the immediate coastline and the picture changes. Galvalume steel finished in PVDF (Kynar 500) is a well-proven, less expensive assembly for the large majority of Florida's coastal counties, which is most of the state given how much of Florida's population sits within reach of salt air without sitting directly on the water. The zinc-aluminum alloy coating under the paint is itself a real corrosion barrier, and PVDF's fluoropolymer chemistry holds color and film integrity under UV and airborne salt better than a standard polyester paint. What we will not do is tell you Galvalume is fine everywhere. U.S. Steel's own GALVALUME product bulletin names the conditions to avoid or take precautions around, and proximity to seawater is on the list, alongside contact with lead, graphite, cement or copper, treated lumber, very long wet times and animal confinement. Treated lumber is the one that catches Florida crews, because it turns up on a re-roof as furring or a repaired fascia and nobody thinks of it as a corrosion problem.
We are also not going to publish a multiplier for how much longer Galvalume lasts than galvanized in salt air. The two coatings corrode by different mechanisms, so drawing an equivalency curve between them is not a sound exercise, and the three-to-six-times figures that circulate in the trade have no traceable source behind them.
The practical takeaway: the further a job sits from open salt water, the more steel with a strong coating package is simply the more economical, equally durable choice. The closer it sits, the more the substrate itself, not just the coating, is doing the protective work.
Fasteners and dissimilar metals matter too, not just the panel
Substrate choice does not stop at the panel. The same Metal Construction Association bulletin that flags the 1,500-foot coastal marine threshold also sets out which fastener materials are compatible with which cladding, and it is explicit that fasteners should match or exceed the corrosion resistance of the panel they are driven into: galvanized steel fasteners are not recommended with aluminum wall or roof cladding, for example, because of galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. On an aluminum coastal roof, that means the fastener, clip, and any trim in contact with the panel need to be aluminum-compatible too, not just the field of the panel itself. This is exactly the kind of detail that gets missed on a coastal job spec'd from an inland template, and it is worth confirming on the order, not assuming.

M100 is the panel we quote first for a true oceanfront property: aluminum substrate, PVDF finish, field-seamed to a 180 degree double lock, under Florida Product Approval FL41812.03-R1, which is flagged for HVHZ use and carries Miami-Dade approval. What this means for your order
Tell us the distance from the water when you send us a job, not just the county. A property in Miami or Key West right on the water is a different substrate conversation than one twenty minutes inland in the same city.
