PBR and R-panel are the same 36" structural profile with one difference that decides where each belongs: the purlin bearing rib. That small extra leg on the underlap side of PBR is why we put PBR on the roof and R-panel on the wall, and it is also the reason PBR carries the one HVHZ approval in our exposed-fastener line - but only in 24 gauge. That gauge split is the single most important fact in this post, so we are leading with it rather than burying it in a table.
PBR is HVHZ approved in 24 gauge only. 26 gauge is not.
This is the one panel in our catalog whose HVHZ status splits by gauge rather than applying to the whole product line, and it gets flattened into a single wrong claim more often than any other panel we sell. The 24 gauge PBR panel is approved for use inside and outside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone under Florida Product Approval FL36968.2, at a minimum slope of 2":12 inside the HVHZ. The 26 gauge PBR panel is not HVHZ approved under any of its three numbers - FL36968.1 over steel purlins, FL24397.6 over plywood, FL27567.1 over steel purlins as a separate assembly - and belongs outside the zone only. Order the wrong gauge for a Miami-Dade or Broward job and it gets rejected at plan review, not caught later. If you take one fact from this post, take that one: ask which gauge before you quote a job inside the HVHZ, and confirm the current revision of whichever FL number applies at floridabuilding.org before submittal.
What actually separates PBR from R-panel
Both panels share the same 36" nominal coverage and the same rib: 1-1/4" nominal, which the Florida Product Approval states as a 1-1/8" minimum, in 24 or 26 gauge Galvalume coated steel at 50 ksi minimum yield. The difference is the purlin bearing rib itself: a shaped leg on the underlap edge of PBR that seats against the panel below it and bears directly on the purlin, giving the side lap a tighter, better-supported joint than a plain R-panel lap. That leg is what lets PBR carry a structural roof load over open framing with confidence; R-panel, without it, is more commonly run as a wall panel where the load path and lap performance requirements are less demanding. In practice, crews that install both profiles treat PBR as the roof panel and R-panel as the wall panel by default, and only cross that line when the exact assembly is engineered and approved for the span, pressure and exposure of that specific job.
PBR is a structural panel in the fullest sense: it spans open steel purlins up to 60" on center over 16 gauge minimum steel framing, with no deck required underneath at all. That is what makes it the standard choice for metal buildings, pole barns and warehouse roofs - the framing carries the panel directly, and there is no plywood or OSB to buy, deliver or install. Where a deck already exists, PBR over plywood is also available under FL24397.6 for the 26 gauge panel.

Notice that these approvals cover genuinely distinct substrates and fastening patterns, not the same assembly under different paperwork. A plans examiner is checking that the approval on the submittal matches the actual purlin gauge, spacing and deck condition on that job, not just the panel name. Where PBR fits: commercial, industrial and agricultural
PBR is the workhorse panel for buildings where the roof structure is steel purlins rather than a wood deck: metal warehouses, light industrial buildings, agricultural structures and pole barns across the state. It shows up constantly in Florida markets with heavy commercial and ag construction - Lakeland, Ocala and Gainesville among them - where spanning open framing without a deck keeps material and labor costs down on large roof areas. Because the 24 gauge holds HVHZ approval, it is the only exposed-fastener panel in our catalog a contractor can put in front of a commercial client in Miami-Dade or Broward. 5V crimp and rib panel are both outside-HVHZ products, so inside those two counties the choice is 24 gauge PBR or standing seam, and nothing else.
R-panel, by contrast, earns its keep on the wall: metal building sidewalls, wainscot, and any vertical application where the load and lap demands that justify PBR's bearing leg are not in play. PBR on the roof and R-panel on the walls of the same building is the normal package on a metal building, and the reason is the bearing leg, not the paint. We catalog the profile as PBR / R-panel because it is one profile; what changes is where the bearing leg is doing work and where it is not.
What a submittal needs to show
Because PBR's HVHZ status turns on gauge, the paperwork that travels with an order matters more here than on almost any other panel we sell. A submittal package for a 24 gauge PBR job in Miami-Dade should show the FL36968.2 approval, the 2":12 minimum slope, and the fastener pattern and spacing called out on that approval's own drawing (1CPBR-HZ), matched to the actual purlin gauge and spacing on the building. A 26 gauge job outside the HVHZ should show whichever of FL36968.1, FL24397.6 or FL27567.1 matches the actual substrate, since those three approvals are not interchangeable with each other even though all three cover 26 gauge. It is also worth flagging plainly: PBR's two gauges are not simply "the same panel, thicker." The 24 gauge and 26 gauge PBR assemblies carry entirely separate Florida Product Approvals, separate fastening requirements, and separate rated pressures. Treat a request for "PBR panel" without a gauge the same way you would treat a request for standing seam without a profile name - it is not a complete spec, and it is the fastest way to end up with the wrong approval attached to a submittal.
