Rib panel is the widest, most affordable panel ERS sells: 36" nominal coverage, exposed fastener, no clips, in 29 gauge steel or 0.032" aluminum. It is not HVHZ approved. Every rib panel assembly we quote, across six separate Florida Product Approvals, is for use outside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone only. For barns, outbuildings and light commercial roofs across the rest of the state, it is the fastest and least expensive route to a real metal roof in our catalog.

What rib panel is built for

Rib panel covers more ground per panel than anything else we sell - 36" nominal versus 24" on 5V crimp and 15.5" to 17" on our standing seam profiles - which means fewer pieces, fewer laps and less crew time per square. It fastens through the pan with exposed screws, no clips and no field seaming, in 29 gauge steel at 80 ksi minimum yield or 0.032" aluminum at 23 ksi minimum yield, both Galvalume coated or PVDF finished depending on substrate. Minimum slope is 1/2":12 with lap sealant at the side laps, or 3":12 without.

That combination of wide coverage, exposed fastening and a lower material cost per square is why rib panel is the usual answer for agricultural buildings, outbuildings, additions and full re-roofs where the budget is the first constraint, not the last one. It is a legitimate structural choice for barns and light commercial buildings, not a compromise version of something better - it is simply built for a different job than standing seam or even 5V.

Approvals cover distinct substrates - that matters at submittal

Rib panel is not a single approval; it is six, and each one covers a different substrate and fastening pattern. That is the detail that trips up a submittal when it gets missed. The aluminum panel is approved under FL24397.7 over 1/2" plywood, with a #10 x 1-1/2" SS Woodbinder HiLo fastener at 9" on center across the panel and 6" along, rated to -78.5 psf. The 29 gauge steel panel has its own set of approvals depending on what it lands on and how it is fastened:

Two things stand out in that table. First, the enhanced fastener patterns pay. A tighter 6-3-6 inch run of screws each side of the overlaps and mid-ribs lifts the rated pressure by about 40 percent on plywood and about 70 percent over battens. That is a useful lever when a job needs more capacity and the budget will not stretch to a different profile. Second, the batten assemblies (FL24397.10 and FL24397.11) rate higher than the plywood assemblies at the same fastener density, which is worth knowing on retrofits where furring over an existing deck is already part of the plan rather than an added cost. None of that nuance survives if a submittal just says "rib panel" without naming which of the six approvals applies to the actual deck condition on that job. Confirm the current revision of whichever FL number you are citing at floridabuilding.org before you submit.

Why it is not an HVHZ option, and what to spec instead

None of the six rib panel approvals - FL24397.7 through FL24397.12 - carry an HVHZ or Miami-Dade compliance statement. That means rib panel is off the table for any jobsite in Miami-Dade or Broward County, full stop, regardless of gauge, fastening pattern or how much the client likes the price. We would rather say that plainly here than have a contractor find out at plan review after material is already crated for delivery. Outside the HVHZ, which is most of Florida's agricultural and light commercial construction - Ocala, Gainesville, Lakeland and the rural counties around them - rib panel is a fully approved, well-suited choice for barns, outbuildings and light commercial roofs.

Rib panel vs. the other exposed-fastener options

ERS carries three exposed-fastener profiles, and rib panel is the widest and generally the least expensive of the three. Against 5V crimp, rib panel covers 12" more per panel (36" versus 24") and is built for a more utilitarian look; 5V leans toward the residential "Old Florida" aesthetic. Against PBR, rib panel is not a structural panel spanning open purlins - it is fastened over plywood, OSB or battens, so it needs a deck or batten system under it, where PBR's structural assemblies do not. If a roof genuinely needs to span open steel framing with no deck at all, PBR is the right call, not rib panel.

Reading the fastener pattern before you order

The gap between a standard and an enhanced fastener pattern on rib panel is not a minor upgrade. On plywood, going from the standard pattern (FL24397.8, -78.5 psf) to the enhanced pattern (FL24397.9, -108.5 psf) buys roughly 40 percent more rated capacity for the cost of additional screws and washers, not a different panel. That is a real decision point on ag and light commercial buildings, where a contractor is often choosing between spending more on a heavier gauge or spending less by fastening the same 29 gauge steel harder. On battens, the same move takes FL24397.10's -108.5 psf up to FL24397.11's -183.5 psf. Whichever pattern gets specified has to be called out explicitly on the order and the submittal, because the fastener count and spacing are what the approval is actually certifying, not just the panel profile.

This is also where the substrate choice and the fastener pattern choice interact. A batten assembly with the enhanced pattern outperforms a plywood deck with the enhanced pattern, which matters on a retrofit where furring strips over an aging deck might already be the plan for other reasons - drainage, venting, or working around an irregular existing roof line. It is worth discussing substrate and fastener pattern together with whoever is engineering the job, rather than picking the substrate first and treating the fastener pattern as an afterthought.

Rib panel is fabricated to exact length by our Florida fabrication partners and delivered crated statewide, like everything else we sell.
