For a Florida coastal job, PVDF (sold under the Kynar 500 name) is the finish we would put on the roof if long-term color and film performance matter more than upfront material cost. SMP, sold as Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL, is a real coating system too, not a downgrade dressed up in a different name, and on a Galvalume steel panel it actually carries the longer of the two published warranty terms. The choice is not PVDF-good, SMP-bad. It is a tradeoff between coating chemistry, substrate options, and price, and it plays out differently panel by panel across our catalog.

What PVDF and SMP actually are

Both are coil coatings, applied to the steel or aluminum before it is roll formed into a panel, not sprayed on after the fact. Full-strength PVDF is about 70 percent polyvinylidene fluoride resin with the balance acrylic, which is the formulation sold as Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000. Sherwin-Williams' own guidance on the coating puts it simply: carbon-fluorine bonds are one of the strongest chemical bonds available, and that is what gives PVDF its resistance to chalking and erosion. Anything sold as PVDF at a lower resin fraction is a different product, so ask for the percentage rather than the word.

SMP is a silicone-modified polyester: a polyester resin with silicone blended into it to improve gloss retention and weathering over a straight polyester. It is a genuinely different chemistry from PVDF, not a thinned-down version of it, and coating manufacturers position it where abrasion resistance and cost matter alongside color retention rather than color retention alone.

The cleanest way to compare the two on paper is the AAMA finish standard each one meets. A 70 percent PVDF meets AAMA 2605, which requires at least ten years on a 45 degree South Florida exposure rack under ASTM G7. WeatherXL SMP is published against AAMA 2604, which requires five years on the same rack. Florida is the industry's benchmark exposure site for exactly this test, so those two numbers are a fair proxy for what the coatings do here rather than somewhere mild.

How each holds up to Florida sun and salt air

PVDF's fluoropolymer backbone is more resistant to breakdown from UV, humidity, and airborne salt than SMP's polyester backbone, and that difference is the reason PVDF costs more. We are not going to hand you a chalk rating or a Delta E fade number for either coating here. Every one of those figures we have seen attached to either coating varies by issuer, by whether the surface is a roof or a sidewall, and by which coating manufacturer's paper it is printed on, and the coil producer that supplies our standing seam line has not put a chalk or fade figure in writing for us to quote. Anyone who hands you a specific chalk rating or fade number as an ERS term is telling you something we have not confirmed. What we can tell you plainly: PVDF is the harder-working coating chemistry of the two for long, unbroken sun and salt exposure, and that is reflected in the warranty term below, not in a marketing number.

The other real-world difference is hardness. PVDF is a softer, more flexible film, which is an advantage during panel forming since it is less likely to crack at a bend, but it is also more prone to surface scratching in handling, which is one reason coil often ships with a peel-off protective film. SMP is a harder film with better out-of-the-box scratch resistance during shipping and installation. Neither difference is a defect in either coating; it is a property you plan around on the jobsite.

Which ERS panels come in which finish

The finish options are not identical across our catalog, and the split matters for coastal jobs specifically. SMP is offered only on Galvalume steel. PVDF is offered on both Galvalume steel and aluminum, and on the panels we fabricate only in aluminum, PVDF is the only finish available.

If a job is going on M100 because it is oceanfront and aluminum is the substrate you want, the finish decision is already made for you. PVDF is not an upgrade on that panel, it is the only option. The finish question only becomes a real choice on the steel profiles across standing seam and the exposed-fastener line.

The warranty difference, and what it does not cover

Here are the only warranty terms we will put in writing, because they are the only ones the coil producer has published for our standing seam line:

  • 20 years on AZ55 acrylic-coated Galvalume steel, mill finish
  • 35 years on Galvalume steel and aluminum coated with Sherwin-Williams Kynar 500
  • 40 years on Galvalume steel coated with Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL SMP

Notice that the 40-year term is longer than the 35-year PVDF term, and that it only applies on steel. That is not a contradiction of everything said above about coating chemistry; it is simply what the coil producer chose to warrant on that substrate and coating pair, and warranty terms are a business decision layered on top of coating performance, not a direct readout of it. On aluminum, SMP is not offered at all, so the comparison does not arise; PVDF is the only choice and it carries the 35-year term.

Oil canning, the visible waviness you sometimes see on a flat panel pan in raking light, is not a defect under either finish and is not grounds for a warranty claim. It is a characteristic of forming light-gauge metal and it is outside the coil producer's control. For 5V, Rib, and PBR, there is no sourced warranty term at all; we quote the term for the exact panel, gauge, and finish on your job rather than a headline number, because coverage is not the same across that range. The coastal exclusion nobody puts on the front page

Here is the part that matters more in Florida than the chemistry does. Coating warranties commonly stop at the coast. Sheffield Metals states it flatly for its own paper: within 1,500 feet of salt water a standard coating warranty will not apply, and for SMP that holds even on aluminum, the substrate otherwise recommended for salt-water environments. That is one manufacturer's form, not ours, and the distances in circulation across the industry are not consistent - real warranty documents use 400 feet, 800 feet, 1,500 feet and 2,800 feet, and some coastal forms impose a twice-yearly fresh water rinse instead of a distance cutoff.

We are not going to attach any of those figures to ERS coverage. The coil producer behind our standing seam line has not published a coastal restriction in writing, and we will not invent one. What the pattern tells a contractor is that near salt water the finish warranty is the wrong thing to lean on, and the substrate decision is the one that carries the job. That is why we quote aluminum, and therefore PVDF, on the properties closest to the water.

Cost and lead time

PVDF costs more than SMP and the gap is real enough to affect a bid. We are not going to publish a percentage, because the figures circulating for the PVDF premium trace back to distributor commentary rather than a price sheet, and PVDF resin pricing has moved sharply as battery and electric vehicle demand has pulled supply away from architectural coil. Ask for the delta on your actual panel, gauge and color. PVDF on the exposed-fastener line also carries extended lead times and minimum order quantities in our own catalog, which is worth planning around on a smaller job. SMP on steel is the more budget-forward path when the job does not specifically call for aluminum.

Making the call for your job

If the substrate is aluminum, PVDF decides itself. If the substrate is steel and the job is a straightforward re-roof away from the immediate coastline, SMP's 40-year term and lower cost make it a legitimate default, not a compromise.
