There are three ways to hold a standing seam panel down, and we stock two profiles of each. SnapLock panels snap over a concealed clip. NailStrip panels fasten through an integral flange that the next panel hides. Mechanical lock panels are closed with a powered seamer after they are set. Everything else about these six panels is close enough that the attachment method is the decision.
The one thing that overrules all of it in Florida: NS100 is not HVHZ approved. SL100, SL150, NS150, M100 and M150 are. If your job is in Miami-Dade or Broward, the choice narrows before you start comparing labor.
SnapLock: SL100 and SL150
A SnapLock panel has a male leg and a female leg. The male leg is captured by a concealed clip screwed to the deck, and the next panel's female leg snaps down over it. No seaming machine, no second pass across the roof, nothing to mobilize or rent.
Both of ours use an 18 ga, 3.5 in. long fixed clip fastened with two #12 x 1 in. pancake-style screws, over a minimum 15/32 in. plywood deck. SL100 is a 1 in. seam at 17 in. maximum coverage, the widest panel in our standing seam line, under Florida approval FL41812.05-R1. SL150 is a 1.5 in. seam at 16 in. maximum coverage under FL41812.02-R1. Both are HVHZ and Miami-Dade approved.
SnapLock is where most Florida residential work lands, and the reason is not performance, it is scheduling. A crew that can hang SnapLock does not need a seamer on the truck, does not need a second trip across the roof, and does not lose a day if a machine goes down. On a 30 square house that matters more than the last few psf of rated capacity.
NailStrip: NS100 and NS150
NailStrip removes the clip entirely. One leg of the panel carries an integral nailing flange with slots in it; you fasten straight through the flange into the deck, then the next panel's leg covers the fasteners. Fewer loose parts on a windy roof and one less operation per panel.
NS150 is a 1.5 in. seam, 24 ga steel, 15.5 in. maximum coverage, approval FL41812.01-R1, and it is HVHZ and Miami-Dade approved. It fastens with #12 x 1 in. pancake-style screws and rates 78.5 psf at 11 in. o.c., or 116 psf at 6.5 in. o.c. with two #10 x 1 in. eclipse head fasteners in the pan at 12 in. o.c.
NS100 is a 1 in. seam and the only standing seam panel we carry in two gauges. The 24 ga runs 16 in. maximum coverage under FL41812.04-R1; the 26 ga runs 15.75 in. maximum coverage under FL46540.01-R0 and is the only one of the six approved over 7/16 in. OSB as well as plywood. It fastens with #10 x 1 in. pancake-style screws. In 24 ga it rates 59.75 psf at 16 in. o.c., 101 psf at 6.75 in. o.c., and 153.5 psf with the pan fasteners added. That 153.5 psf figure is the highest allowable load in our entire standing seam line.
And it is still not permittable in the HVHZ. Neither gauge of NS100 holds HVHZ approval. This is exactly the kind of thing that reads like a technicality and is not one: an approval covers a tested assembly in a defined jurisdiction, and a high number under one approval does not travel to another. We would rather be blunt about it than lose a job at plan review.
Mechanical lock: M100 and M150
Mechanical lock panels are set, then the seam is rolled closed with a powered seamer. That second pass is real labor and real equipment, and it produces a joint that does not rely on snap engagement to stay together.
M100 is 0.032 in. aluminum, PVDF finish only, 1 in. seam, 16 in. maximum coverage, seamed to a 180 degree double lock, on a UC-3 butterfly two-piece clip assembly. Approval FL41812.03-R1, HVHZ and Miami-Dade approved. It rates 63.5 psf with clips at 24 in. o.c. and 101 psf at 6 in. o.c. M100 is the panel we quote oceanfront, because aluminum does not corrode where a coating is scratched or a cut edge is exposed.
M150 is the heaviest assembly in the line: a 1.5 in. seam closed to 90 degrees, in 24 ga steel under FL46540.02-R0 or 0.032 in. aluminum under FL46540.03-R0, both HVHZ and Miami-Dade approved, at 16 in. maximum coverage on a 1.5 in. tall 26 ga fixed clip. In steel it rates 101 psf with clips at 16 in. o.c., and 131 psf at 8 in. o.c. with a continuous sealant bead on top of the male leg. In aluminum the same two methods rate 56 psf and 108.5 psf. Steel and aluminum carry separate approvals and separate ratings, so do not quote one number for both.

All loads above are allowable loads with a factor of safety of 2.0 already applied, taken from the signed Florida Product Approval evaluations. They are not ultimate values, and they are not the maximum design pressures you will see quoted for exposed-fastener panels such as 5V. Never restate one as the other. Verify the current revision of any approval at floridabuilding.org before submittal.
Slope, deck and where each one belongs
All six are approved over a minimum 15/32 in. plywood deck, with the 26 ga NS100 also approved over 7/16 in. OSB. None of them go over open purlins. On a Florida re-roof that puts deck condition on the critical path, because the approval covers an assembly and a soft or delaminated deck is not the assembly that was tested.
On low slope, the mechanically seamed panels are the conservative answer. A seam that has been rolled closed to 90 or 180 degrees is a fundamentally more closed joint than one held by snap engagement, and that is the reason to accept the extra labor. We will not publish a slope threshold we cannot source, so treat that as a design conversation with the manufacturer's installation instructions in hand rather than a rule of thumb.
Exposure decides material before anything else decides method. Within sight of salt water, aluminum with a PVDF finish is what we quote, and that points to M100 or the aluminum M150. Inland, Galvalume steel is fair and permittable and stiffer per dollar.
Labor and cost, honestly
Panel cost between these six is close. The gap that shows up on a job is labor and equipment.
- NailStrip is the fastest to hang. No clips to set, no seamer, one fastening operation per panel.
- SnapLock adds clip setting but nothing else. No second pass, no machine.
- Mechanical lock adds a full second operation across the whole roof plus a seamer to buy, rent, transport, power and maintain. On a small job that mobilization is a meaningful share of the cost. On a large or coastal job it is noise.
The cost driver nobody prices correctly is coverage width. SL100 at 17 in. covers 9.7 percent more roof per panel than NS150 at 15.5 in. Across a big simple plane that is fewer panels, fewer clips, fewer linear feet of seam and less time. We break the seam height and coverage tradeoff down in 1 inch vs 1.5 inch standing seam.
Choosing by Florida county
Start with jurisdiction, not preference.
- Miami-Dade or Broward. You are inside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone. SL100, SL150, NS150, M100 and M150 only. NS100 is not an option at any price and we will not quote it into those counties. See Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
- Palm Beach, Monroe, Lee, Collier and the rest of the coast. Outside the HVHZ, so all six are permittable, but the wind calculation still governs. Monroe County carries the highest design wind speeds in Florida despite sitting outside the HVHZ.
- Inland and North Florida. All six are on the table. This is where NS100 earns its place, particularly the 24 ga, which carries the highest allowable load in our line and installs faster than anything else here.
